Nursing Student Found Deceased at University of Georgia.
A distressing incident unfolded as a local nursing student was discovered deceased at the University of Georgia, prompting suspicions of foul play by the authorities.
Authorities in Georgia are currently investigating the death of a college student whose body was discovered in a wooded area on the University of Georgia’s main campus in Athens.
The student, who attended Augusta University’s College of Nursing in Athens, has not been publicly identified. No suspects have been arrested or named by the police in connection with the case.
On Thursday around noon, UGA police were alerted by a friend concerned about another friend who hadn’t returned from a run at the intramural fields. UGA Police Chief Jeffrey L. Clark mentioned in a news conference that an officer found the woman unconscious, not breathing, and with “visible injuries” in a wooded area near Lake Herrick, close to fields and tennis courts.
“Medical responders arrived at the scene and determined that the individual had passed away. The chief of police chose not to disclose the cause of death.
There is a suspect who remains at large, but the chief assured that there is currently no immediate threat to the public.”
UGA and Augusta University have canceled classes.
Classes at the University of Georgia (UGA) and Augusta University have been canceled. This decision comes after an investigation into another death at UGA’s student dormitory on Wednesday. Authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected, and this incident is not connected to a separate homicide case on Thursday.
UGA announced the cancellation of classes after 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and all classes scheduled for Friday. University officials are urging students to utilize the counseling and psychiatric services available on campus, considering the two unrelated death investigations.
It’s been a tough 24 hours for our university. We’re grieving the sudden loss of a student at Brumby Hall,” the statement expressed. “As we cope with this tragedy, today’s news adds more challenge for our campus, especially our students.”
Augusta University’s Athens campus canceled classes on Friday. University President Brooks A. Keel described the news of the student’s death as “shocking.”
“Despite the class cancellations, the Athens campus will remain open as a space for students and staff to access support and counseling as needed,” the statement explained. Counseling services were provided on-site starting Friday for College of Nursing students.
Athens-Clarke County Unified Government Mayor Kelly Girtz expressed deep sadness about Thursday’s murder in the city on social media.
Girtz expressed, “We’re committed to working closely with UGA PD to swiftly resolve this investigation, and we’ll put in extra effort to prevent similar tragedies in the future.”
First homicide on UGA grounds in decades.
The recent homicide on campus is the first of its kind since December 21, 1983, when a UGA student named Donna Lynn Allen was fatally stabbed while walking to her car. The attacker was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
Two other cases involving the killings of female UGA students, both unsolved, occurred off campus.
A UGA student was found dead in Brumby Hall dormitory the day before the woman was discovered at the lake. The university stated that the past 24 hours had been tough, with students mourning the sudden loss. The community, especially the students, is being tested by these tragic events.
