Brunson Scores Big Again, Leads Knicks to Victory Over Kings

In the closing seconds of the game, with the New York Knicks leading by three points, Jalen Brunson squared up against Kings defender Keon Ellis. Recognizing Ellis’s tendency to search for a screen, Brunson improvised a clever maneuver to exploit the situation.
Jalen Brunson showcased his talent once again on Thursday, scoring an impressive 45 points in the Knicks’ victory over Portland. This season, he’s had seven games with over 40 points, a remarkable feat for a first-time All-Star. Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau commended Brunson’s consistency, noting his ability to step up with crucial plays when the team needs them most.
Brunson’s recent achievement puts him in a special category among Knicks players. He’s the first to score 40 points in consecutive games since Carmelo Anthony did it in February 2014. This places him alongside legendary Knicks players Bernard King and Patrick Ewing, who have also accomplished this remarkable feat.
Brunson expressed, “I may not have their experience, so this means a lot to me. But most importantly, I’m glad we won.”
Donte DiVincenzo contributed 15 points, Josh Hart added nine points, and snagged 12 rebounds. Isaiah Hartenstein showcased his defensive prowess with five blocks and 14 rebounds, along with seven points.
Coach Thibodeau remarked, “It was a fantastic team effort. Our defense really stepped up against a tough offensive team.”
Domantas Sabonis led the Kings with 21 points and 14 rebounds, marking his 49th consecutive double-double.
De’Aaron Fox added 20 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds, though he struggled shooting at 5-for-19. Malik Monk contributed 18 points off the bench.
Fox commented, “We had chances, but we couldn’t capitalize. Against a strong defensive team, we needed to make the most of their errors, which we didn’t do tonight.”
The Kings recorded their lowest home game score of the season, managing only 91 points. This defeat extends their winless streak to 0-8 when scoring below 100 points. Meanwhile, the Knicks have now held their fifth consecutive opponent to less than 100 points.
Reflecting on the game, Brunson noted, “The Kings are a formidable team, particularly on offense. Coach Mike Brown has effectively coached them. Holding them under 100 points is no small feat, but we managed to do it and secure the win.”
It was the Kings’ inaugural loss this season when conceding fewer than 100 points, bringing their record to 6-1 in such games.
The game witnessed 20 lead changes and 13 ties, highlighting its closely contested nature.
At halftime, the Knicks held a 53-48 lead, which they augmented to nine points early in the third quarter courtesy of two layups by Brunson.
