LeBron James achieved a notable milestone during the Los Angeles Lakers’ impressive comeback win against the Los Angeles Clippers.
LeBron James delivered an impressive performance in the fourth quarter, scoring 19 of his 34 points to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a comeback victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night. Overcoming a 21-point deficit, the Lakers secured a 116-112 win.
In the final moments of the game, Kawhi Leonard missed a 12-footer, and James took advantage by making a long pass to Cam Reddish for a dunk, effectively sealing the Lakers’ stunning victory. This win holds significance as it marks the final regular-season game between the Lakers and the Clippers as co-tenants of their downtown arena.
Despite being 39 years old, James played a pivotal role in the win, making five of his season-high seven 3-pointers. He single-handedly outscored the Clippers in the fourth quarter, posting 19 points compared to the Clippers’ 16. Throughout the final period, James either scored or assisted on 11 of the Lakers’ 13 baskets.
On the Clippers’ side, Leonard contributed 26 points, while James Harden added 23 points and nine assists. This loss for the Clippers is notable as it is the first time since December 23rd that they have suffered consecutive defeats. Additionally, they were without All-Star Paul George, who missed his second consecutive game due to a sore left knee, and starting center Ivica Zubac, who was ill.
Despite the Clippers’ commanding 98-77 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, James led an impressive 29-8 run in just 7 minutes and 34 seconds. Anthony Davis’ free throws ultimately tied the game at 106-106 with four minutes remaining, and James later found Rui Hachimura for a go-ahead 3-pointer.
With D’Angelo Russell’s 3-pointer, the Lakers secured a 114-108 lead with 1 minute and 12 seconds left to play. However, both Harden and Leonard managed to score on drives to the hoop, while James missed two shots for the Lakers. Fortunately, Leonard’s final shot missed its target, enabling James to find Reddish for a dunk, ultimately securing the victory to the delight of the thousands of Lakers fans in attendance.
This season, the Lakers emerged victorious in three out of the four games played against the Clippers, marking the first time since 2011-12 that they have won the season series.
Contributing to the Lakers’ success, Davis finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Russell had 18 points and Hachimura added 17.
Since its opening in 1999, the Clippers and Lakers have shared the Staples Center, along with the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings. Over the next 25 years, the NBA franchises have faced each other four times a year, commonly referred to as the Hallway Series due to their close proximity in the arena.
However, this era will soon come to an end in the fall when the Clippers relocate to the Intuit Dome, owner Steve Ballmer’s new arena in Inglewood. Ballmer believed that the Clippers needed their own home to establish themselves as a separate entity from the Lakers, who have achieved an impressive 17 NBA championships.
While there is still a possibility for the teams to meet in a playoff series, this has not yet occurred.
Reddish made a return to the game after missing 14 games due to a sprained right ankle.
The Clippers managed to build a 17-point lead shortly after halftime, taking advantage of the Lakers’ struggles. The Lakers faced difficulties with their shooting, missing 15 of their first 18 3-point attempts and only earning two free throws in the first half. Harden, in particular, had an impressive first half, scoring 18 points and showcasing his scoring ability even in the absence of his high-scoring teammates.
