Google Photos is extending access to its AI-driven photo editing tools to all users.

Google has announced that Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Portrait Light can now be used by Google Photos users, including those without a Google Pixel 8 or a Google One subscription.

By 2024, on-device AI is expected to be widely used. Samsung has embraced generative AI in its latest Galaxy devices, with the Galaxy S24 being marketed as the “first AI smartphone” and equipped with AI features. Apple is also expected to make a significant AI announcement at WWDC in June. During its October event, Google demonstrated its generative AI features on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

Previously, tools like Magic Eraser (which uses AI to remove unwanted objects from photos), Photo Unblur (which automatically enhances blurry photos), and Portrait Light (which adjusts lighting in photos) were exclusive to the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro or were available as paid features with a Google One cloud storage subscription.

Now, anyone with a Google Photos account can utilize these tools for free, although there are certain requirements. ChromeOS users must have a Chromebook Plus with version 118+ or at least 3 GB of RAM. Mobile users must have Android 8.0 or iOS 15 or newer. Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Portrait Light will also be accessible on Pixel tablets.

Additionally, Google has announced that the Magic Editor will be available to all users of the Google Photos app, regardless of whether they use Android or iOS. Unveiled at last year’s Google Pixel event, the Magic Editor offers users many of the same capabilities as Photoshop, without requiring technical expertise. By using generative AI, users can move objects or edit specific areas of a photo by highlighting them.

Android and iOS users will receive 10 free Magic Editor saves per month on Google Photos, but a Google Pixel or a paid Google One account will be needed for additional usage.

Expanded access to Google’s AI photo editing tools will be rolled out on May 15, and Google Photos can be downloaded for free from the App Store.
