Damian Lillard of the Bucks was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) title in the 2024 NBA All-Star Game.
With Lillard scoring 39 points, the Eastern Conference established a new record for the highest number of points scored by a team in an All-Star Game.
During the NBA All-Star Weekend, Damian Lillard of the Milwaukee Bucks displayed an exceptional performance on the court, earning the title of All-Star Game MVP. He scored 39 points, leading the Eastern Conference to a 211-186 victory over the West, setting a record for the highest-scoring midseason exhibition in history.
Lillard entered the annals of history by becoming just the second player, alongside Michael Jordan, to win an event on Saturday night and claim the MVP title during the same All-Star Weekend. In a humble response, he remarked, “Being compared to Mike is a privilege and a significant accomplishment, especially during the All-Star Weekend. It’s a rare achievement, evident by the limited number of players who have accomplished it.”
The day before, Lillard secured victory in the 3-point contest, narrowly surpassing Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks in the final round, reminiscent of Jordan’s dunk contest triumph in 1988.
During the All-Star Game, Towns delivered a remarkable performance for the West, scoring 50 points in just 28 minutes, joining the elite group of players who have reached the 50-point mark in All-Star history. However, Lillard faced strong competition for the MVP award from his Eastern teammates, Tyrese Haliburton of the Indiana Pacers and Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics.
Haliburton, a local fan favorite, exhibited his skills with 32 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists, outperforming the West single-handedly at the start of the game. Brown contributed 36 points and 8 rebounds, with a pivotal performance in the third quarter that aided the East in regaining control of the match.
Ultimately, Lillard clinched the MVP accolade, garnering seven out of 12 votes, while Haliburton secured the remaining five. Lillard’s standout moment occurred when he sank a 41-foot 3-pointer midway through the third quarter, further extending the East’s lead.
Lillard concluded the game with a total of 44 points, shooting 14-for-26 from the field and 11-for-23 from beyond the arc, in addition to 6 assists. Notably, this marked his eighth All-Star appearance but his first as a starter.
Reflecting on his triumph, Lillard, who recently transitioned to the Bucks following a lengthy tenure with the Portland Trail Blazers, expressed gratitude for the support amidst the challenges encountered by his new team.
“It has been a challenging year, but experiences like this truly reveal one’s character,” Lillard stated. “Maintaining self-belief, particularly in adversity, is crucial. This MVP win exemplifies that resilience.”
While acknowledging the high-scoring nature of the game, Lillard emphasized the necessity for heightened competitiveness in upcoming All-Star matchups.
