An 8-year-old boy died after consuming strawberries sold at a school fundraiser, prompting the county to issue an urgent warning.

A young boy, aged eight, has lost his life after consuming strawberries purchased from a school fundraiser. Following this incident, the county health department has issued an urgent warning.

Officers were called to a home in Hopkins County, Kentucky, at around 6:30 am on Friday after reports that a boy was having difficulty breathing and was unresponsive. According to his parents, the boy had consumed several strawberries from a high school fundraiser held at Madisonville North Hopkins High School the previous night.

A person fell ill following an incident. Their parents administered Benadryl and bathed them, but their condition worsened. Consequently, they were taken to the emergency room around 10:30 p.m. and later returned home.

Regrettably, the family discovered the individual unresponsive when trying to wake them for school on Friday. According to News, the Hopkins County Health Department stated that a preliminary autopsy report attributed the cause of death to an “isolated allergic reaction.”

Denise Beach, Director of the Hopkins County Health Department, stated: “Dr. Christopher Kiefer, Medical Examiner, indicated that the incident involving strawberries appears to be an isolated allergic reaction. It’s important to note that this is a preliminary report, so we advise against consuming strawberries at this time.”

The health department advised against consuming strawberries from Madisonville North Hopkins High School and Hopkins County Central High School. They distributed 443 flats from North and 535 from Central, supplied by Juicy Fruit LLC, Southern Grown, and Sizemore Farms.

Health officials are currently collecting strawberry samples for testing at the state laboratory, as reported by the health department.
